It started with a storage unit and not enough time.

I spent a week helping my mother clean out her storage unit. We opened every box, and she had a story for every single thing in there.

A chipped teacup. A stack of letters tied with twine. A coat I'd never seen her wear. Each one unlocked something — a place, a person, a moment I'd never heard about. She'd hold it up and her face would change, and out would come this whole world I didn't know she'd lived in.

The problem was, we didn't have the time. We were there to clear the unit, not to sit with each story. If I'd stopped to listen to every one of them, we'd have been there a year. So I'd nod, she'd set it down, and we'd move to the next box. I'm sure some of those were great memories. We just didn't get to hear them.

On the drive home it hit me: how do we capture the stories of the people we love while they're still with us — in their own voice, straight from the source? — the moment gr8beyond began

That was the seed. Capture it in their voice. Get it straight from the person who lived it, not second-hand, not summarized. And then the second idea followed right behind: what if AI could help with the interview itself? Not to replace the conversation, but to be the patient one — the listener who always has another question ready, the one who notices the detail worth digging into and knows how to draw the story out a little further.

That became gr8beyond.

I didn't have an answer at first. We can't get the stories from the source once they're gone. But I kept turning it over, and something settled into place: we can gather them from the people who were there.

Every family already holds the pieces. One person remembers how she laughed. Another knows the story behind the photograph. Someone else can tell you exactly what she would have said about it. None of them has the whole picture — but together, woven together, they can build a pretty good idea of who this person really was.

So gr8beyond grew a second life. Not just capturing voices while someone is still here, but gathering and curating the stories of someone who's already gone — pulled together from the people who loved them, shaped into something that feels like them again. Something a family could keep privately, share at a celebration of life, or even host online for anyone who wants to remember them.

It started with my mother and a storage unit full of stories we didn't have time to hear. It grew into a way to make sure those stories don't disappear — whether the person is still sitting across from you, or already a memory the family is trying to hold onto.
